My history lesson today was about World War II....this is what I learned/studied:

Japan decided to attack the United States Navy and Air Force at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii (My mom and dad visited there when they went to Hawaii. See picture above.)

All of America was surprised when Japan attacked and the Navy and the Air Force were almost totally destroyed. The following day the USA declared war on Japan.

Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the USA.

Four years of war followed. Over 17 million people died in battle and over 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

The United States carried out their threat to Japan. The president ordered a new weapon to be used against the Japanese. On August 6th, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan.

Three days later, the city of Nagasaki was the target of a second bomb.

On August 14th, Japan surrendered and World War II was over.

I think that the president had a very hard choice to make about using the bomb....on one hand it ended the war but on the other hand it was devastating to the people of Japan.
